Completing a research component is often favorably looked on by employers, because it demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Having a research project under your belt will also help gain you respect if you work with research academics in the future, as they will be able to relate to you better. If you are looking to continue on to a PhD, you should take the research option.
You need a 65% average in your coursework units to qualify for the research component.
If you take this option:
You will complete a research project with an equivalent workload of four coursework units. Check our research projects page for ideas about the types of projects you can do.
Not everyone is interested in doing a research project, for example, if you'd prefer to specialise more in strategic communication or education you may prefer to do further coursework.
If you take this option:
Choose another four units from the electives list.
You don't have to decide straight away whether you want to do a research thesis. Most students take the research component in the second year of their degree, so you have time to discuss your options with your lecturers and past students. It's easy to change this part of your enrolment if you change your mind.
